Well folks, I’m making the clubhouse turn! I’ve been at it for about 5 months now. Several nights a week and pretty much every weekend. Basically every spare minute working around my “day job” and my other musical commitments. This is definitely a labor of love and I am thrilled to be working on this project with my long time friend and “former” golf buddy Paul Dymon. I say “former” because he doesn’t play much golf anymore and we haven’t lived in the same city (or time zone for that matter) for 17 years. Nonetheless our friendship has endured as we went through our separate life journeys.
I met Paul in 1987 while performing at the old Dunes on the strip in Vegas, where the Bellagio now stands. The Oasis Lounge was one of the hotter spots in town and I was the trombonist & musical director for “Then & Now”, a very popular Vegas show band. Paul played trumpet and he was subbing for my trumpet player who was also playing with another band. Sound confusing? Well it is. As much as we musicians wanted to be in two places at once (to make twice the money) it was impossible. It was not uncommon to send a sub to play the last set of your first gig so as to make the next gig. Paul was “the sub” and that’s how we met. we became fast friends. In one of Paul’s postings he tells the story about me scribbling out a horn arrangement on a break and playing it in the next set. I only vaguely remember that incident. I can tell you about the time right before my departure from Vegas to move back East when we played the ceremonial last round of golf. It was 6:30am and I hit myself in the mouth with my own golf ball. It hit a tree and came right back at me, all in less than the blink of an eye! By the time we got to the emergency room we were hysterical with laughter. I got 9 stitches in my lip, along with a good story to tell.
When Paul first told me about his plans to go to the Keys and shoot a bunch of underwater footage I was excited about the opportunity to compose original music for the project. In future posts I will discuss the process, which has many challenges, both technical and creative. I still have another 8 minutes or so to finish and I’m going to get to it! Til next time….

On that golf shot… two important facts. 1. I was in the cart 20 feet back ducking under the dash on the back swing, and 2. Garry is a trombone player. Lips are sort of important. He was reduced to backup vocals and go-go dancer.
Thanks for that memory. On the drive to ER I told him, “For what it’s worth, you did knock the $#*!^ out of it.” Muffled by the golf rag holding his lip together I heard, “Thanks dude. That made it all worth it.” LOL
